Privacy
Short version: if you don't sign in, nothing about you leaves your phone. If you sign in, your saved list is kept in your own account and you can delete it at any time.
Who runs this
This site is run by a parent in Prosperous, Co. Kildare, who is the data controller for it. Contact: hello@schoolcompass.ie.
If you don't sign in
- Your location, the town or Eircode you type, and any pin you drop are used on your device to sort schools. They are not sent anywhere or stored. Only the first three characters of an Eircode are used.
- If you open the map to drop a pin, the map pictures come from OpenStreetMap, which sees your internet address and the area you are looking at, as with any website that shows a map.
- Schools you star or track are saved in your browser's storage on this device only. Nobody else can see them.
If you sign in with Google
We store:
- Your Google account ID, name and email address, so you can sign in (Firebase Authentication).
- For each school you track: the status, the admission window and deadline you typed, your notes, and whether you starred it.
This is kept in Google Cloud Firestore in London (europe-west2). Google runs the service for us as a data processor.
If you turn on email reminders
Reminders are off unless you turn them on in the Account menu. When on, once a day we check the published admission dates for the schools you have starred and email your Google account address if a date is due (applications opening, closing in 3 days, decision day, and accept-by if you applied). We note which reminders were sent so you don't get one twice. Emails are sent through Resend, our email provider, which receives only your email address and the reminder text. Every email has a link to stop them, or you can turn them off in the Account menu.
If you suggest admission details, report a problem or suggest a missing school
We store what you picked or entered (the school, dates, numbers, class type, an optional link and the reason you chose) and your account ID, so the suggestion can be deleted with your account. There is no free-text box. Once the suggestion has been reviewed, it is deleted: approved details are published without any link to you.
There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking cookies. Your data is never sold or shared.
Who can see it
The database rules mean only you, signed in, can read or change your list through this site. Other parents cannot see it.
As the operator, I could technically open the database through Google's admin console. I don't, except to delete an account when asked.
Please don't enter details about your child
Nothing on this site asks for your child's name, date of birth or diagnosis, and please don't put them in your notes.
Deleting your data
- Signed in: use "Delete my account" on the main page. It deletes your saved list and your sign-in straight away. It cannot be undone.
- Not signed in: un-star and reset the schools in "My list", or clear this site's data in your browser settings.
- Or email hello@schoolcompass.ie and it will be deleted within 30 days.
Your data is kept until you delete it.
Your rights
Under GDPR you can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data. You can download your list at any time from "My list". You can also complain to the Data Protection Commission.
You choose to create an account. The legal basis for storing your list is your consent, which you can withdraw by deleting your account.
